As part of a concerted effort to address the great challenge of modernizing the mathematics curriculum, Centro Metrológico de México took the lead and established the MetroMatematicas Institute (IMM) as an innovative way to develop the curriculum and the current method of teaching mathematics in basic elementary and high school education, and likewise, provide a scientific framework for teaching in the Mexican educational sector. This is how the IMM was born, as an organization specialized in research, training and certification in mathematics of the 21st century, in concert with the advanced technology industry and the national and international education sectors.
Carry out, support and catalyze a collaborative and interdisciplinary research, the curriculum and teaching method of mathematics of the 21st century, focusing on the development of students’ intelligence through the solution of cause-effect problems, as well as reduce to the maximum the index of failure in this matter.
Use the mathematics of the 21st century for the formation of problem-cause-effect solvers in the advanced technology industry and in the education sector, through the implementation of formal education, informal, higher education and public disclosure programs.
Provide scientific and technical leadership in the curriculum research and teaching method of mathematics of the 21st century.
Explore new approaches using modern information technology to do interdisciplinary and collaborative research among researchers widely distributed in the country or abroad.
Continuously improve and transfer pedagogical models for the teaching of mathematics of the 21st century, as well the mathematical technology, textbooks, didactic material and MetroMatematicas Laboratories in the national and international education sector.
To concretize the mission, it is encouraged the creation of work teams from the Instituto de MetroMatematicas (IMM), which are supported through cooperative agreements between IMM (CMM) and the participating institutions the work teams; these cooperative agreements involve substantial contributions from both CMM and the teams. Executive summaries in each team’s annual reports describe their recent contributions to the research of the curriculum and method of teaching mathematics in the 21st century.
Currently, the IMM has 5 teams, including 100 research engineers in the advanced technology industry and 200 research professors in 40 institutions in Mexico. It also has 3 associated international institutions, all for now in the USA. The director and a staff of “IMM Central”, located in CMM’s MetroMathematics research laboratory, in Hermosillo, Sonora, administer the Institute. The principal investigator of each team, and the director of the IMM, are part of an executive council. Its function is to consider research matters at the level of the entire Institute, mathematics teaching activities, technological development and external associations.
